Bubby Hilda’s Kitchen is a heartfelt initiative under the auspices of the Artist Quarter Minyan, guided by the visionary leadership of Rabbi Zalman and Chana Traxler. Both originally from the United States, Rabbi Zalman and Chana were inspired by their deep-rooted connection to their faith and decided to plant their family’s roots in the Holy Land. Upon settling in Tzfat, they quickly recognized the urgent and growing need for a community hub, a sanctuary that would cater to the unique challenges faced by Olim (immigrants) in the area.
However, the current war has devastated this vital industry, leaving many families without a stable income. The already struggling community has been pushed to the brink, with the closure of businesses and a sharp decline in visitors exacerbating the existing economic hardships.
With unwavering dedication, Rabbi Zalman became a lifeline for countless families, providing essential support to those struggling to meet their basic needs. His compassionate efforts include distributing grocery vouchers, supplying clothing for children, and assisting with utility bills – ensuring that no family is left in the dark or cold.
Bubby Hilda expressed her love through food. She greeted everyone with an open heart and a motherly command to sit down and eat something warm from her kitchen. The quintessential image of Bubby Hilda depicts her bustling around the kitchen, cooking and serving hot chicken soup, warm, crispy chicken, traditional kasha varnishkes, a warm slice of pie, and freshly fried salmon latkes.
Anyone who stepped through her front door knew Bubby Hilda was a bubby to the entire community, watching every newborn baby with love and care so their mothers could return to work after maternity leave. She did so with zest and love for her holy work of caring for precious babies and toddlers. She nurtured, loved, and nourished every baby, child, and person who had the privilege of her company.
